ROCKLEDGE - City officials should have a better idea this summer of whether they can move forward with plans for a new police station, said city manager Jim McKnight.
"The plans are on hold," he said. "We're rewriting our purchasing procedures to see what options are available to us."
For example, officials want to find out more about using a "design/build" method, or using the same contractor to design and construct the station, he said.
Also, the city likely will have to wait until this summer before it gets a clearer picture of next year's city budget ... |
Baby Giraffe Makes Her First Appearance
Apr. 18, 2008

VIERA -Shouting youngsters held out crackers in vain for the Brevard Zoo's baby giraffe Thursday as she made her public debut.
She didn't approach the children, and except for a quick stop, mom Johari didn't get too close to the platform, where zoo patrons strained to see the 5-week-old girl as she looked curiously at the crowd.
The zoo let out dad Raffiki for his first outside-the-barn encounter with the baby. "He's a perfect father," said animal curator Mike Magaw, who stayed with the giraffes to ensure all went well.
Soon, the whole herd was out and galloping. "At first the baby started running around to get away from them, and that just gets them all to run," Magaw said.

Wetlands Site In Viera Earns Statewide Honors

Nestled behind a water treatment plant, Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands quickly became a favorite bird-watching spot for Andy Provost.
There are plenty of birds, a sprinkling of four-legged critters and a driving trail that makes it easy for Provost, 61, of Massachusetts to capture it all on film.
"It's just one of the good spots in Florida to photograph," said the retired middle school math teacher who travels the country to take pictures of wildlife.
The wetlands, which used to go by the name Viera Wetlands, earned a spot Monday on the Great Florida Birding Trail, a selection of sites known as excellent for bird-watching
It was one of eight Brevard County sites added to the trail this year. A total of 37 local sites ... |
Brevard Zoo To Embark On Major Safari

VIERA - The naming rights for a new giraffe will be auctioned off at the Brevard Zoo's Safari Under the Stars fundraiser.
The fundraiser will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the zoo, 8225 N. Wickham Road.
Five hundred people attended last year's Safari Under the Stars, which raised $150,000 for the zoo, said Andrea Hill, the zoo's marketing director.
She said this year's event would include live and silent auctions. Guests will be able to bid on various items, such as the right to name a female giraffe that was born at the zoo March 11.

Viera Courthouse Expansion On Hold
Apr. 04, 2008
|
|
VIERA - Brevard County officials will proceed with the design of a major expansion of the Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Justice Center, but they are holding off on issuing bonds to pay for the construction.
County commissioners made these decisions March 4 after noting uncertainties about how property tax reform will affect the county budget.
"I'm certain we need to build an expansion," Commissioner Helen Voltz said. But because of budget uncertainties, "I'm not sure we should move forward at this time."
Officials had considered whether to sell bonds that would have provided ... |
